Probošt’s Christmas crib

About the exposition

The Třebechovice Museum of Nativity Scenes is a workplace specialised documentation of static and mechanical nativity scenes, which saves them for future generations and presents them to the general public.

At present, the museum manages the collection of nativity scenes and municipal collections. The most precious object of the municipal collections is the handwritten illuminated manuscript from 1559. The collection of nativity scenes consists of more than 450 nativity scenes made of various materials and coming from different parts of the Czech Republic and abroad.

The most valuable and admired exhibit is undoubtedly the Třebechovice mechanical nativity scene of the folk carvers Josef Probošt, Josef Kapucián and the author of the mechanism Josef Friml. The nativity scene was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1999. The entire nativity scene, including the mechanism, was created more than a hundred years ago, reaching remarkable dimensions: 6.89 m long, 1.89 m wide and 2.35 m high.

Třebechovice Probošt’s nativity scene can be found in the permanent exhibition of the museum, which is complemented by exhibitions of nativity scenes from the famous nativity scene regions of the Czech Republic and abroad.
